Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velasquez - La Venerable Madre Jeronima de la Fuente; Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain; c.1620
Mother Jeronima de la Fuente (also known by her religious name, Jeronima de la Asuncion), born in Toledo, was confidant to Margaret of Austria, and was an esteemed member of the court. At the age of 65, she set sail from Sevilla to Manila, and there would found the Real Monasterio de la Inmaculada Concepcion de la Madre de Dios de las Monjas de Santa Clara, the first monastery for contemplative nuns in the country, and quite possibly all the Far East. A movement for her beatification and eventual canonization is underway.
