“About the year 286, under the Emperor Diocletian, the persecution escalated. Many of those converted by Sebastian were arrested and subsequently martyred. He was finally apprehended and after being bitterly reproached by Diocletian for ingratitude, he was sentenced to death. After being shot by many arrows he was left for dead. His body was being taken for burial by a widow, but when she realized he was still alive, she took him to her home and nursed him back to health.
One day he publicly confronted the emperor, Diocletian, and denounced the cruelties done to the Christians. He was again arrested and sentenced to death. After his execution he was buried in the, “ad catacumbas.” It is probably because of this tradition that Sebastian is considered the patron of archers and soldiers.”
